Full explanation

What this paper is

This is a practice paper for the first half of your English book. It covers the first five lessons. It carries 50 marks and you get two hours. This follows the pattern most schools use for a half-yearly paper. It is not a board paper, because Class 5 has no board exam.

How the paper is built

Part A has twenty small questions of one mark each. Part B has nine questions of two marks. Part C has two big questions of six marks each. One of them is a passage you have never read. The other asks you to write a paragraph of your own.

Start by reading

Read the whole paper once before you write anything. Tick the questions you know at once. Do those first. A question you leave for later is not a question you have lost.

The passage question

Go to the questions before you read the passage. Then you know what to hunt for. Now read the passage twice. The second reading is where the answers appear. Underline the words that answer each question.

Answer in full sentences

A one-mark answer can be short. A two-mark answer needs a full sentence. Write in full sentences even when the answer feels obvious to you. Half a sentence often gets half the marks.

Plan the writing task

Give the writing task two minutes of thinking before your pen moves. Jot four or five words in the margin. Those words are your order. Then write straight through without stopping to rub out.

Watch the clock

Part A should take about thirty minutes. Part B needs about forty. Keep half an hour for Part C. Keep the last ten minutes for yourself.

Check at the end

In those ten minutes, read your own paper. Look for a missing capital letter. Look for a missing full stop. Check the spelling of every word you were unsure of. These small marks add up faster than any long answer.
