How to sit this paper
A short guide to the half-yearly practice paper: what is in each part, how long to spend there, and how to check your work before you stop.
Full explanation
Turn every page first
Start by looking through the whole paper. Do not write anything yet. Count the questions, and see where the big marks sit. There are thirty-one questions and two hours. Nothing here is new to you. Every question comes from the first five chapters you have already studied.
How the paper is built
Part A has twenty questions of one mark each. Part B has nine questions of two marks. Part C has two big questions of six marks. This paper follows the pattern most schools use for a half-yearly test. It is not a board paper, because Class 5 has no board exam.
Part A goes quickly
Read all four choices before you tick one. The first choice can look right until you read the fourth. If one question holds you up, leave it and move on. Come back at the end. Thirty minutes is plenty for the whole of Part A.
Part B wants your own words
One or two sentences are enough here. Do not copy a line from your book. Say the thing, and then say why. Two marks usually means two ideas, so check that you have written both.
Part C wants your thinking
The picture question is not decoration. Look at the picture first, and find the part each question is talking about. Then answer. For the last question, plan three points in your head before you begin to write.
Use what you have seen
Some answers are easier if you think of home. The tap in your kitchen, the bins in your street, the river or pond near you, the flag at your school gate. A real example is worth as much as a remembered line.
Keep ten minutes for checking
Read your own answers once. Look for a question you skipped. Check every number you wrote. Then put your pen down. You have done well.
