How to Sit the Half-Yearly Practice Paper
A guide to the half-yearly Maths paper: what each part holds, why steps earn marks, and a checklist of the first five chapters.
What you will be able to do
- I can plan my time across the five parts of a paper
- I can show my working so that every step earns its mark
- I can check an answer by working it back
- I can draw and read a bar graph with a sensible scale
Full explanation
Three hours, eighty marks
This paper covers the first five chapters, from patterns to primes. Read the whole paper before you write anything.
Part A is twenty quick marks
Twenty questions of one mark. Half a minute each. Do the ones you see at once and come back to the rest.
Part B wants a short answer
Twelve questions of two marks. Name the step you took, then give the answer.
Part C wants the working
Six questions of three marks. Here the steps carry marks of their own, so write the sum you did and not the answer alone.
Part D is the data question
Six marks in four parts, worth one, one, two and two. Read the counts twice before you use them.
Part E is the long answer
Two questions of six marks. Plan each in the margin first.
Show your working everywhere
An answer alone can earn one mark out of three. The same answer with the steps beside it earns all three. Even a wrong answer can carry marks if the working is sound.
Check by working backwards
If you divide, multiply your answer back and see whether you return to where you began. It takes seconds and it catches most slips.
Keep fifteen minutes back
Stop a quarter of an hour before the end. Check that no question is blank and that every answer that needs a unit has one.
About this paper
This paper follows the pattern most schools use for a half-yearly test. It is not a board paper. Class 6 has no board exam.
