⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Concept

Megha and Pawan

Same bags, one sore shoulder.

Two children carry identical things in their bags, and only one of them is uncomfortable.

💡 Tip

Why area matters

Same pull, smaller patch.

The weight of a bag presses on your shoulder because the Earth pulls the bag down.

💡 Concept

The quantity

Force and area together.

Since the area matters as much as the force, one quantity puts them together.

💡 Concept

Why tanks sit on roofs

Somebody lifted all that water.

Almost every water tank you can see is up on a roof or a tower.

💡 Tip

The experiment

One narrow, one broad.

Two clear pipes with a rubber balloon over the lower end of each, clamped upright side by side.

💡 Concept

Both balloons

Not nearly the same. The same.

The two balloons bulge by exactly the same amount.

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

Pressure: Force Spread Over an Area

Pressure is force for each bit of area, so the same force can be gentle or fierce depending on how much area it acts on. Broad straps use the first; a nail point uses the second.

  • Pressure is the force acting on each unit of area.
  • It is found by dividing a force by the area it acts over.
  • Only the force at right angles to the surface is used at this stage.

2

Pressure in Liquids

A liquid presses on everything holding it, and what sets the pressure is the height of the column above the point you ask about - not how much liquid there is, and not how wide the vessel is.

  • Two pipes of different widths filled to one level bulge their balloons equally.
  • So the weight of liquid in the vessel is not what the balloon responds to.
  • What the two pipes share is the height of the water standing in them.

3

Air Pressure

Air presses on everything around us, in every direction, and the push is far larger than it feels. Two identical chart sheets and a rubber sucker are enough to show both facts.

  • The air wrapped round the Earth is the atmosphere, kilometres deep.
  • It is mostly nitrogen and oxygen, with argon, carbon dioxide and others.
  • An unfolded chart sheet is harder to lift than the same sheet folded small.

4

How Wind Forms

Air moves from high pressure to low, faster when the difference is larger, and stops when the two level out. And fast-moving air is at a reduced pressure, which is why a gale lifts a roof from below.

  • Air travels from wherever the pressure is higher towards wherever it is lower.
  • A difference in pressure is all that is needed; nothing has to push it.
  • Two balloons joined by a straw exchange air with nobody blowing.

5

Storms, Lightning and Cyclones

Warm air rises and cooler air rushes in: that one cycle makes clouds, rain, storms and, over a warm ocean, a cyclone with a calm eye and a violent ring. Lightning is the air itself giving way.

  • Warm moist air rises, leaves low pressure, and cooler air rushes in to replace it.
  • Rising air expands and cools, so moisture condenses into droplets and forms clouds.
  • Strong winds together with rain are called a storm.

❓ Leveled MCQ practice

Try the smart MCQs from this kit

175 questions laddered from warm-up to topper-level, each with an explanation. A taste:

What exactly does pressure measure?

Intermediate
A The force acting on each unit of area B The total force applied to an object C The weight of the object being carried D The area that a force happens to cover
Show answer & explanation

The force acting on each unit of area

Force and area together, which is why the same force can give two very different pressures.

In which unit is pressure measured?

Beginner
A Kilograms of mass B Newtons of force alone C Square metres of surface D Newtons per square metre
Show answer & explanation

Newtons per square metre

That unit has its own name, the pascal.

Pawan’s bag hurts his shoulders and Megha’s identical bag does not. What differs?

Intermediate
A The distance each of them walks B The force of gravity on each bag C The area the straps press on D The weight inside the two bags
Show answer & explanation

The area the straps press on

Broad straps share the same pull across more shoulder, so each bit carries less.

Read these statements about pressure. I. It is the force acting on each unit of area. II. The same force on a smaller area gives a higher pressure. III. Pressure and force are two names for one quantity. Which are correct?

Intermediate
A I and II only B II and III only C I and III only D I, II and III
Show answer & explanation

I and II only

They are different quantities, which is the whole point of the bag with the narrow straps.
