⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

✏️ Example

A plant getting bigger

Growth has several signs.

💡 Key Idea

Nutrients

What food is for.

Food gives carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals. Those, with water, are all needed for growth.

💡 Tip

Before testing

Three guesses, and no answer yet.

💡 Key Idea

Starch, in the leaves

Where food is kept.

Plants store food as starch, a kind of carbohydrate, and the starch is produced in the leaves.

💡 Tip

Broad and flat

The shape is deliberate.

A broad flat surface catches as much light as possible for the amount of leaf there is.

💡 Key Idea

Chlorophyll

The colour is machinery.

A green pigment that makes leaves green and helps the leaf capture sunlight efficiently.

📖 Smart notes

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

What Plants Need in Order to Grow

Three pots, one changed condition each, and two weeks of watching. That is enough to settle what a plant must have, and it is a lesson about experiments as much as about plants.

  • while a plant is growing, fresh leaves and branches appear and the stem thickens.
  • Its height increases, so growth shows in several ways at once.
  • Food supplies carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals.

2

Leaves, the Food Factories

A leaf has to lose its colour before it will tell you anything. Once it does, two patches on one leaf and two plants in two places settle what starch needs.

  • Plants store food as starch, which is a kind of carbohydrate.
  • That starch is produced in the leaves, which are broad and flat.
  • Leaves look green because of a green pigment called chlorophyll.

3

Air, and Photosynthesis Written Out

One leaf with half of it inside a bottle settles what the air contributes. A water plant in sunlight shows what comes back out.

  • A plant is kept dark for two or three days first, to lose stored starch.
  • Caustic soda in the bottle absorbs carbon dioxide from the air.
  • Half the leaf goes into the bottle through a split cork, half stays out.

4

Stomata, and the Two Pipelines

Gases cross at pores too small to see without a microscope. Water rises by one set of tubes and food travels out by another, in opposite directions.

  • A thin peel is taken from the lower surface of a leaf and mounted in water.
  • Ink is added, a coverslip put on, and the peel viewed under a microscope.
  • Tiny pores appear on the peel; these pores are called stomata.

5

Do Plants Respire?

A flask of soaked seeds and two tubes of lime water answer it. And the word equation that comes out is the one from the last topic, read backwards.

  • Moong bean seeds are soaked overnight and laid on wet cotton in a flask.
  • A cork with two holes carries two tubes, and the flask stands 24 hours in the dark.
  • Two test tubes of lime water are used, but only one is joined to the flask.

New leaves and branches, more height and a thicker stem all show growth.

Compare a kitten with the cat it becomes. What has usually happened?

Beginner
A Its size and weight increase B Its body stays exactly as it was, except for the height it reaches C It stops eating D It loses weight
Show answer & explanation

Its size and weight increase

Its body also goes through various changes.

Which list gives the nutrients that food provides?

Intermediate
A Sunlight, water and the air that surrounds the plant on every side B Carbon dioxide, oxygen and the water that the roots have taken in C Starch, glucose and oxygen D Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals
Show answer & explanation

Carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals

Water is needed as well, but it is not one of those five.

A pupil sets the growth activity up on her windowsill with saplings of the same kind. How many pots are used?
