⚡ Veda Bites

The whole idea, one bite at a time

Veda Bites are swipeable micro-lessons — each one teaches exactly one idea. Here's a taste from this kit; the app has the full deck.

💡 Concept

The definition in full

Read it to the end.

Health is a state of well in body, well in mind and well among other people, and not simply free of sickness.

💡 Tip

Why "not merely" is there

The clause is load-bearing.

Without it, anybody who passes a search for germs counts as healthy.

✏️ Example

A boy who was not ill

No germ anywhere in this story.

He moves to a school in another city, has no friends there, and his parents are busy. To cope he spends more time on his phone.

💡 Concept

Half an answer

Ask a class and you get refusals.

Do not smoke. Do not sit all day. Stop staring at that screen. All sound advice, and all of it the same half.

💡 Tip

Why the doing half matters

Where the other two parts live.

Mental and social health do not come from avoiding anything. They come from sleeping, relaxing, and spending time with people.

💡 Fact

What to eat

Two-sided, like the list itself.

Plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains. Less processed, fatty and sugary food and drink.

📖 Smart notes

What you'll study, topic by topic

1

What Health Really Means

Health is being well in all three of body, mind and social life, not just the want of any illness - and a boy with no illness at all shows why the last clause matters.

  • Health is wellness across body, mind and social life at once.
  • The definition adds "more than an untroubled constitution" to block the loose reading.
  • All three parts are required, and none is an optional extra.

2

Staying Healthy

The list has two halves and most people remember only one - and a clean place to live turns out to protect everybody sharing it, not just you.

  • Staying healthy is set out as two lists: things to do and things to avoid.
  • The doing half is where mental and social health come from.
  • A good diet means plenty of fruit, vegetables and whole grains, and less processed, fatty or sugary food.

3

Signs, Symptoms and Disease

A symptom is felt and reported; a sign is seen or measured. A doctor wants both, because either alone can mislead - and a disease can sit in the mind as well as the body.

  • A symptom is felt by the patient and must be reported.
  • A sign can be observed or measured by someone else.
  • The test for which is which is who can observe it.

4

Two Kinds of Disease

Ask one more question of any illness: can the cause reach somebody else? A pathogen behind it makes the illness communicable, with a route to close. No pathogen means a habit to change instead.

  • A communicable disease has a pathogen behind it and can pass between people.
  • Bacteria, viruses, fungi, worms and protozoa can all be that pathogen.
  • Typhoid, dengue, influenza, chickenpox and COVID-19 belong to this group.

5

Preventing and Treating Disease

Prevention is cheaper and kinder than cure, and works best when a whole community acts. A vaccine trains the immune system before the danger arrives; an antibiotic kills bacteria and nothing else.

  • Prevention costs less than cure and protects people who never knew they were at risk.
  • The Bhadrak sanitation campaign cut open defecation and childhood diarrhoea.
  • Immunity is the natural power of a body to resist disease.

❓ Leveled MCQ practice

Try the smart MCQs from this kit

175 questions laddered from warm-up to topper-level, each with an explanation. A taste:

How does the World Health Organization define health?

Beginner
A Being well in body, mind and social life B The absence of any known disease at all C A body able to fight off any infection D Freedom from all pain and tiredness
Show answer & explanation

Being well in body, mind and social life

The definition also adds "and not simply the lack of illness", which exists to rule out the easy answer.

Which phrase in the definition rules out calling an illness-free person automatically healthy?

Intermediate
A Mental well-being right throughout B Complete physical well-being at all times C Not merely the absence of disease D A state of social well-being
Show answer & explanation

Not merely the absence of disease

It is there on purpose, because the loose definition passes people who are plainly not well.

A boy has no illness of any kind, but no friends, broken sleep and frequent headaches. Is he healthy by the chapter’s definition?

Intermediate
A Yes, because headaches are quite minor B No, but only because of the headaches C Yes, since no disease was found in him D No, two of the three parts are failing
Show answer & explanation

No, two of the three parts are failing

The definition requires all three kinds of well-being, so failing two of them settles it.

What was the original cause of the lonely boy’s health problems?

Beginner
A A bacterial infection B A poor diet at home C A vitamin deficiency D A social problem
Show answer & explanation

A social problem

He had moved city, had no friends and his parents were busy. No pathogen was involved at any point.
