Class 7 Mathematics Chapter 101: Practice Paper · Half-Yearly

About This Half-Yearly Paper

An 80-mark paper over the first seven chapters, in the shape a school uses, with a marking scheme for every written answer.

What you will be able to do

  • Sit an 80-mark paper in three hours in one sitting.
  • Show the working, because marks are given for it.
  • Check an answer by substituting it back.
  • Mark your own written answers against the scheme given.
  • Turn each lost mark into the chapter it came from.

Full explanation

What this paper is

This is a practice paper, not a board paper. Class 7 sits no board exam, and the books carry no marked test of their own. The shape here is the one a school commonly uses, so that sitting it feels like the real thing.

What it covers

Chapters 1 to 7. Large numbers, arithmetic expressions, decimals, expressions using letter-numbers, parallel and intersecting lines, number play, and triangles. Nothing from the second half of the book appears.

Show the working

In mathematics the working carries marks of its own. A right answer with no working loses them, and a wrong answer with good working keeps some. The marking schemes here are split that way on purpose, so you can see where each mark sits.

Check before you move on

Almost every answer here can be checked in one line. Substitute a solution back into the original equation. Add the three angles and see whether they make 180. Count the matchsticks against the rule. Checking is the only part of the work that proves anything.

How to spend three hours

Give the twenty one-mark rows about twenty-five minutes together. Leave a clear half hour for the two long answers at the end. If a row will not come, mark it and return to it rather than losing ten minutes.

What to do with a lost mark

Write the chapter number beside it. When the whole paper is marked, see which number appears most often. That chapter is where your next hour of revision belongs.
