How to Use the Half-Yearly Paper

An 80-mark rehearsal over the first eight chapters, sampling all four strands, with a marking scheme on every written question.

What you will be able to do

  • Sit an 80-mark paper in three hours without notes.
  • Mark your own work against a scheme rather than an impression.
  • Turn the marks you dropped into a named chapter to reread.

Full explanation

What this paper is

One paper of 80 marks over the first eight chapters. Three hours, closed book. Class 8 sits no board exam, so this is a rehearsal. The point of a rehearsal is to find out what is not ready while there is still time to fix it.

How the 80 marks are laid out

Twenty one-mark questions with four options, then twelve two-mark questions and six three-mark ones. After those comes a case study worth 6 in four parts. Last are two six-mark questions, and they are last because they take the most thought.

Four subjects in one paper

These eight chapters run four strands together: resources and world geography, medieval and colonial history, the franchise and Parliament, and the factors of production. The paper samples all four rather than working through the chapters in order, so do not expect the questions to arrive in the sequence you studied them.

What the written questions want

Very few marks here are for a date or a name on its own. A question asks why a famine was so severe, or why one kingdom survived where another fell, or what accountability requires. So give the reason, and name the evidence it rests on. A correct fact with no argument attached will not earn the mark.

Marking it

Every written question carries a scheme that says where each mark sits. Use it exactly. Award nothing for an answer that happens to be right with no reason given, because a scheme that rewards a lucky guess is worse than no scheme at all.

What to do with the result

Write the chapter number beside every mark you dropped, then add them up by chapter. One or two chapters will account for more than their share, and those are your revision plan. Do not reread all eight.
