How to Use the Annual Paper

An 80-mark rehearsal over all fifteen chapters, weighted towards the second half of the book, with a marking scheme on every written question.

What you will be able to do

  • Sit an 80-mark paper in three hours without notes.
  • Mark your own work against a scheme rather than an impression.
  • Turn the marks you dropped into a named chapter to reread.

Full explanation

What this paper is

One paper of 80 marks over all fifteen chapters. Three hours, closed book. Class 8 sits no board exam, so this is a rehearsal rather than a real paper. A rehearsal is for finding out what is not ready while there is still time.

How the 80 marks are laid out

Twenty one-mark questions with four options, then twelve two-mark questions and six three-mark ones. After those comes a case study worth 6 in four parts. Last are two six-mark questions, and both want an argument rather than a list.

How it is weighted

The half-yearly paper covered the first eight chapters, so this one leans towards chapters 9 to 15. Every one of the fifteen is asked about somewhere, though, and the earlier chapters turn up in the case study and the six-mark questions as well as in the one-mark ones.

Four strands, one paper

History, geography, civics and economics all appear here, and some questions cross between them on purpose. The case study is one of those: it starts with a city and ends with a court. Do not expect a question to stay inside the chapter it came from.

Marking it

Every written question carries a scheme that says where each mark sits. Use it exactly, and award nothing for a right answer with no reason attached. The two six-mark questions ask you to trace or to explain, so an answer that lists correct facts and never connects them cannot reach full marks.

What to do with the result

Write the chapter number beside every mark you dropped and add the losses up by chapter. Rank the chapters and keep the worst three. Then check the other way as well: tick off every chapter the paper asked about, and if one of them left no impression at all, start there.
